A dog who is named Florence spent most of her life inside a small cage on a dog meat farm located in Wonju, South Korea. Her cage was tiny that there is less space for her to move around.
This situation caused Florence to have deformed hind legs. Her future was sad since she is meant to be slaughtered and be eaten. However, fortunately, somebody found her and decided to help her get out of her horrible future and give her a better one.
Florence was rescued by the Humane Society International and moved to the United States. The moment she arrived, she was then brought to the Humane Society of Central Oregon (HSCO), together with other sixteen dogs from the meat market.
Because of her deformed legs, Florence cannot move them properly and was afraid to people around her. She did not eat the dog food given to her. The staff realized that they need to find a way to get her trust to help her.
The staff discovered that doggies in the meat farms are being fed with rice and meat; therefore, they quickly gave some for Florence, and then she ate it immediately. As the days went by, she started to have trust in humans and knew that these people would help her.
Since the time she arrived in HSCO, Florence underwent two leg surgical procedures. The first surgery aims to strengthen her knee areas while the second to repair and align her right hind leg. After the operations, she started intensive physical therapy.
After a few weeks, Florence’s cheerful personality started to shine out. She was a friendly dog who liked to play and run. She even made friends with other doggies and developed more confidence and trust.
Lynne Ouchida, the community outreach supervisor of HSO, brought Florence to her public event to a big opening of a Starbucks Puppuccino. And that is the time when Florence’s life has changed. A woman named Megan Watkins who was present in the activity ended up becoming her new mother.
Fortunately, the Watkins family decided to care for Florence to check if she will be a good fit. Her new foster parents made her feel comfortable at home. She even bonded with the family’s pet cats.
Later, the family had finally decided that they only not want to foster Florence. They want to adopt her and be a forever member of their family. Now, Florence found her permanent home and was happy with the people who love her.
