These easy puppy training tips will have even a brand new dog parent leading the pack in no time. Anyone can learn how to train a dog at home just by using the tips below. Give it a go.
Exercise makes me happy.
Daily exercise will make for easier puppy training. Be sure to take your dog on a walk daily and before your training session.
The magic is in the daily routine.
Just like my kiddos, dogs need to have a daily routine. Meals, playtime, exercise, and training. Start early and your dog will be much happier and easier to get down to business when it’s time.
Be the pack leader
You must establish yourself as the pack leader. If you do this, training your puppy will be way easier.
It’s mostly mental
Your pup can feel if you are nervous, scared, or mad. Be the confident pack leader I know you can be. By doing so, you will get their trust and respect.
Repetition is the mother of all success
If you are going to train your puppy, go all in. You don’t need to yell, get mad, or punish. Just stay consistent and you will see improvement. Think about the end goal. Have fun.
A puppy is a puppy is a puppy
It’s awesome to love your dog, but remember he isn’t a baby and you shouldn’t treat him like one. Dogs that understand their role within your family can be trained. If your dog doesn’t understand his role, you will have problems.
If your dog jumps on your couch and it bugs you, that needs to be focused on in your training. If your dog jumps on visitors and you don’t like it, focus on that in the training. Setting boundaries for your puppy is a must.
Consistency is key
Let your puppy get away with something “just once” and you could be making a mistake. How will your dog know that’s its unacceptable? I don’t like my dog Copper to eat off our plates, so I focused on that. I still have to remind my kids from time to time, but the goal is to stay consistent. It’s just easier in the long run.
It takes a community
You know the saying to raise a kid… Puppy training needs to be the same. As mentioned above, I still have to remind my kids not to feed our dog from our plates. If your whole family is on board, it will be much easier. Be sure you all are on the same page and with the same goal of training your puppy.
Better late than never
If you have a grown dog and haven’t started to train it, just get started. Use the same tips above and stick with it. It’s amazing when you’re dog listens to your commands, not to mention, it’s much safer to have an obedient dog too.
