Did you know that research shows most dogs don’t like hugs. I know, it was sad news to many. Don’t worry though, dogs still want to receive our affection. A dogs purpose is not only to love us but to be loved and I want to help you tell them in your doggies language.
Here Are 5 Loving Ways Your Dog Will Understand
1. Look Deeply Into Their Soul Through Their Eyes
Dr. Brian Hare, professor of Cognitive Neuroscience and author of The Genius of Dogs did an interview with the one and only Anderson Cooper, a dog lover too, that your dog hugs you by looking into your eyes. I 100% believe that because you can just feel the love in that moment.
So next time you and your dog are just hanging together, show the love by gently and softly talking and petting him while staring deep into his eyes. Dr. Brian also said in his interview that moments like this can stimulate a dogs brain to release Oxytocin, which is also what bonds a momma and their baby.
Amazing stuff right?
2. Raise Your Left Eyebrow
There is a 2013 study that showed when a dog is greeted by their beloved owners, your dog will raise their left eyebrow while greeted by a stranger, they raise their right eyebrow.
What was so cool about this raising of the eyebrow is that the right brain is tied to emotions and also controls the left side of their face. Remember above, that’s the brow that was raised when the beloved owner greeted their dog.
The analytical behaviors are controlled by the left side of the brain that controls the right side, which was raised when greeted by strangers.
So, if you are able to show some facial emotions to your dog, make it the left side, and your dog will feel loved.
3. A Gentle Lean
Ever notice your dog leaning on you? Most don’t, including me. I actually found is annoying at times, then I learned that it is also a dog love hug.
So without crushing your dog (LOL) gently lean on them. This will show trust and affection.
Are you feeling the love yet? I am:)

4. Share The Bed
Just like us humans, we only sleep with who we love and trust. (normally:) Fido is very vulnerable and so if you let your dog sleep with you, you are showing major love and trust back to your dog.
If you are like me, I don’t let our dog sleep in my bed but you can still have snuggle time on the couch while you watch your favorite show. Share the love will ya.
5. Just Be You
We all show love differently and rest assure that if you love your dog, they already know it. From our voice to our body language, they know. Dogs are the same, keep showing love and you will know they are showing you their love in their own way too.
How do you tell your dog you love them?
