Duke, the Rottweiler from South Florida, has been with Joshua Edwards since he was just a puppy. Unfortunately, on April 7, 2007, the 1.5-year-old Duke suddenly went missing. After months of searching their neighborhood, knocking each door, and checking animal shelters just to find his dog, Edwards lost his hope.
He loved and longed for Duke so much that Edwards eventually got another Rottweiler and named him Duke Jr. Little did he know that after eight long years, his beloved pooch will find his way back into his arms. Edwards couldn’t believe the news when he first heard it from the hospital. But after getting another phone call from Maria Elena Cartaya, he finally believed it.
Maria Elena found Duke wandering along Southwest 137th Ave. She brought the dog to the clinic for checking. The vet, Juan Santamarina, told Maria Elena that the dog seemed to have been previously cared for and just recently been on the streets. They scanned him for chips, and that’s how they tracked down Edwards, Duke’s registered owner.
Now, after eight years, Edwards and Duke finally had their much awaited, tear-jerking reunion at the Tamiami Animal Hospital. As Duke walked out of the door, he stopped, sniffed, and then, as if realizing who’s in front of him, started licking his owner. Edwards was in tears.
Both of them were obviously happy to see each other. Duke even laid down and offered his belly for some belly rubs. Edwards took his dog home to meet his wife, sons, and other dogs. Upon his arrival, he started exploring his new home and marking his territory.
When he saw Edwards holding the tennis ball up, he knew that it was playtime like their good old days. Edwards also tried to give him some commands to see if Duke still remembers. Thankfully, he complied. Despite the time and distance, it’s as if nothing has changed.
