First of all you have to know there is no “normal” dog. Who wants a normal dog anyway. Boring! All joking aside, it may look like your neighbors dog is but I’m sure if you watched longer you would thinking differently.
Read some “abnormal” things that I have noticed with some of our dogs.
Why does my dog chase his tail?
Ever see babies grabbing and sucking their toes? Reminds me of when puppies chase their own tails, lol. I don’t consider than an abnormal activity unless your dog does it all the time. An easy way to determine if it’s an issue it by distracting your dog with food or going for a quick walk, if he rather chase his tail, I would say check in with your local vet. Just in case.
Why does my dog like sniffing crotches?
As gross as it is, dogs like to smell each others butts, but they shouldn’t be smelling yours, lol. Unfortunately, your dogs learns a lot by smelling butts, maybe even yours. If it bothers you, go see a trainer.
Why does my dog scratch his butt on the carpet?
I used to laugh when I saw my dog do this. And then I found out that is common for dogs to drag their butts on the floor after handling their doggy business. They will also do this if their stool is loose. You like to be clean too right? To be honest, scooting could mean impacted anal glands, ouch, or a tapeworm… so have your best friend checked by a vet.
Why does my dog enjoy humping?
Well I could ask the same question about my next door neighbor but… that’s for another blog.
Dog humping is a stress reliever for your dog. This is probably true for all species. You will see this mainly with male dogs but don’t rule out the females either. If it doesn’t bother you that much, look the other way. If they are humping your friends, they may be trying to show dominance. Just call your dog off, no biggie. Get your dog some training if it gets out of hand or you just want it to stop.
Why do dogs eat grass?
I love greens like the rest of us, but seeing a dog eat grass is pretty odd. What I learned was that dogs like greens too. You may even see them eating sticks or dirt too. Totally normal as long as that’s not their main diet. If you see them binge on your lawn, it could mean they are having stomach problems. Same with dirt, it could be a medical issue, like anemia, if they eat it alot. Get that checked.
Why does my dog roll around in garbage?
We passed by a dead decayed turtle on our daily walk and my dog all of sudden flops down right on top of it and rolling around like a pig in mud. He looked extremely pleased. What i learned was it may be that it will help your dog hide their scent from prey. What do you think? Otherwise, it’s not an issue other than the smell. Just steer clear and have a fresh smelling dog.
Why is my dog scared of loud noises?
My dog was scratching at our door one afternoon, which was odd because he has never done that.
When I looked outside he was standing, almost like he was hiding from someone, right by the door and when I opened it he ran me over to get inside. When I went outside my brother in law was shooting his gun. Then the same thing happened on fourth of July. Thunderstorms? Same thing. He gets nervous and scared.
Talk with your vet about things you can do to help. When we are shooting guns and popping fireworks, we now will stay by his side and have fun and let him know everything is okay. It definitely helped us and our dog.
So what’s the verdict?
So in closing, your dog is totally not normal but who is right? If you truly feel that their is an issue, it’s best to just consult your vet to be on the safe side.
